IV Sedation: A Safe Alternative to General Anesthesia
For many Florida patients, the idea of being placed under general anesthesia or being sedated can be worrisome. At Aqua Plastic Surgery, we maintain the highest standard of care and best practices for anesthesia to provide our patients with peace of mind before, during and after treatment. Our highly trained anesthesiologist Malon Devine, C.R.N.A., M.B.A., has almost 20 years of experience in anesthesia for cosmetic surgery and utilizes the most up-to-date anesthesia delivery techniques and monitoring systems to provide the safest and most comfortable experience during and after cosmetic surgery procedures.
Individualized Patient Care
Malon Devine follows a “less is better” protocol when delivering anesthesia to Ft. Lauderdale plastic surgery patients. This protocol is narcotic sparing so patients can wake up faster and without nausea or other side effects. Each patient is monitored during post-operative recovery with one-on-one nursing care to ensure that patients wake up safely with as little discomfort as possible.
What Is TIVA Anesthesia?
TIVA is defined as Total Intravenous Anesthesia. This technique is safe, effective and has been around for many years.
TIVA is still technically a general anesthesia, but one without inhalation gas or the placement of a breathing tube in the throat. Instead, the anesthetic is administered through the vein. The advantage of this technique is that it reduces or eliminates some of the risks associated with inhalation anesthesia. For instance, the chance of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) significantly decreases with TIVA. The other advantage of the technique is a significant improvement in post-operative pain control. The technique usually uses a local anesthetic nerve block around the area that is operated on to manage pain during surgery and in the hours immediately after surgery. TIVA can be used during a variety of cosmetic procedures including breast augmentation, breast implant removal and breast lift. For many Ft. Lauderdale patients, TIVA can provide a much more pleasant recovery and minimize the need of post-operative pain medication.
