The Consultation Process
Your private consultation is where you get to discuss your concerns and goals with Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel. You’ll also receive a thorough facial examination so your doctor can recommend a treatment plan. Some patients may benefit from surgery on both eyelids, while others may only require one or the other.
About the Procedure
Blepharoplasty is typically performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your treatment plan, and whether other procedures are being performed at the same time.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid surgery addresses heaviness and skin laxity above the eyes. The incision is hidden within the natural crease of your eyelid to conceal it as much as possible. Through this opening, excess skin is removed and small amounts of fat may be repositioned or removed to create a smoother contour.
Lower Blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid surgery focuses on resolving puffiness or hollows beneath the eyes. The incision is usually placed just beneath the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid, depending on the amount of excess skin and fat that needs to be addressed. In many cases, rather than removing fat entirely, Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will reposition it to create a smooth, natural-looking transition between the lower eyelids and cheeks while helping avoid a sunken appearance.
Recovery
The First Few Days
You can expect swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness around the eyes for the first week following surgery. Some patients also experience temporary dryness or sensitivity to light. Your doctor will provide tips to make recovery as comfortable as possible, such as cold compresses and keeping your head elevated, especially during the first 48 hours.
Returning to Daily Life
Many patients feel comfortable returning to desk work and other light activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Strenuous exercise and swimming should be avoided for at least 2 to 3 weeks or until your doctor gives you the go-ahead.
Most patients can begin wearing eye makeup after about 2 weeks, once the incisions have healed.

No, a properly performed blepharoplasty will not alter the shape or expression of your eyes. Our goal is to help you look refreshed, not like a different person.
Eyelid surgery does require incisions, but they’re carefully placed – either within the natural folds of the upper eyelids, beneath the lower lash line, or sometimes inside the eyelid, leaving no external scar at all.
Blepharoplasty results are long-lasting. The natural aging process continues after surgery, but most patients don’t need to repeat the procedure for many years. The results of lower eyelid surgery often last even longer, because the repositioned fat pads rarely return to their previous position.
Patients should wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses for about 2 weeks following blepharoplasty to avoid touching or stretching the tissue around the eyes. During your follow-up appointment, your doctor will clear you to wear contact lenses once the tissues are stable.
