What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves the definition of the neck and jawline by addressing loose skin, excess fat, and changes in underlying muscle structure. It can be performed on its own or combined with a facelift or mini lift for a more comprehensive result.

Most neck lifts involve two parts. The first addresses excess skin to create a smoother, more refined profile. The second works at a deeper level, tightening the underlying muscle that’s responsible for vertical banding that becomes more visible over time. Depending on your goals, liposuction beneath the chin can also be beneficial.

Benefits of a Neck Lift

Results from a neck lift are some of the most meaningful in facial surgery. Patients typically see meaningful improvement within weeks, with the final result revealing itself over three to six months as swelling fully resolves. Results can last up to a decade, making it one of the most durable investments in facial rejuvenation.

The most common benefits that patients see:

  • A sharper, more defined jawline
  • Smoother skin along the neck with reduced laxity and banding
  • A cleaner transition between the face and neck
  • Reduced fullness or heaviness beneath the chin
  • A more balanced and proportional overall profile

Beyond visible changes, patients consistently describe a dramatic shift in confidence. The neck is one area that’s hard to hide, so correcting it has an outsized impact on how many people feel.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

The best candidates for a neck lift are those in good general health, and are bothered by changes in their neck that haven’t responded to other treatments.

Age is less of a factor than most patients expect. Neck lifts are performed across a wide range of ages with strong results, and the procedure can be tailored to address early or more advanced changes. What matters most is your specific anatomy and the goals you’re hoping to achieve. Skin that retains some elasticity tends to produce the cleanest results, though this is something your surgeon will assess during your consultation.

Many patients come in for a standalone neck lift, focused entirely on the neck and jawline, while others combine it with additional procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will evaluate your unique anatomy and walk you through the approach that makes the most sense.

What to Expect During Your Neck Lift Procedure

Neck Lift Jupiter

Before Surgery

In the days leading up to your neck lift, we’ll send you detailed pre-operative instructions. These include guidance on which medications to avoid, what to eat and drink beforehand, and how to prepare your home for recovery. Arranging for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first day is also recommended.

During Surgery

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and takes between 2 to 4 hours depending on complexity. Incisions are planned carefully so that any scarring stays within the natural contours of the ear and hairline, where it will remain hidden as you heal.

After Surgery

Before you leave, our team will provide detailed post-operative instructions and information on what to expect. Most patients go home with a light bandage around the neck to minimize swelling and support initial healing. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment shortly after surgery so your doctor can monitor your progress and answer any questions as you recover.

Q&A with Dr. Rankin

My priority with neck lifting is tightening the banded muscles of the neck and creating a defined jawline, while keeping the result looking natural and the scars hidden. I usually remove some fat just below the chin as well, which adds to the overall definition and gives a cleaner profile.

I’m assessing three things: the muscles of the neck and whether they need to be tightened, the amount of excess fat that can be removed, and the quality of the skin, which can be improved by removing skin where appropriate. A neck lift will usually tighten and rebalance the lower face and jowl region as well, so I’m thinking about that area at the same time.

The platysma muscles of the neck often separate as patients age, which is what creates visible banding. During surgery, these muscles are tightened and pulled together so they’re no longer visible through the skin.

The fat that sits beneath the muscle, which can show as a “double chin,” is carefully removed to create a more defined neck contour. These techniques are what give a neck lift its lasting result.
