What to Expect with Breast Augmentation
The Consultation Process
During your private consultation, Dr. Deziel will evaluate your natural breast tissue, measure your frame, and discuss your goals. She’ll provide guidance on implant size, shape, profile, and placement so together you can determine the best approach to reach your aesthetic goals. For some patients, she may also recommend combining your augmentation with a breast lift.
About the Procedure
Breast augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, and usually takes between 1 and 2 hours.
Dr. Deziel inserts the implants through small, discreet incisions within the natural crease underneath the breast or around the lower edge of the areola. Depending on your treatment plan, implants may be positioned above or under the chest muscle. You can read more on implant placement below.
Your incisions will be closed with thin, dissolving sutures and protected with surgical dressings.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation
The First Few Days
Mild swelling, tightness, soreness, and bruising are common in the first few days. Dr. Deziel will fit you with a supportive surgical bra and prescribe pain medication to keep you as comfortable as possible.
Returning to Daily Life
Many women return to desk work and other light activities within a week. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks, and patients should try to sleep on their back for the first 2 to 4 weeks.
Follow-Up Appointments
Dr. Deziel will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing and ensure your implants are settling properly.
When You’ll See Your Final Results
Your breasts will look larger immediately, but they’ll initially sit high and feel firm due to swelling and tight muscle tissue. Over the next 3 to 6 months, your breasts will gradually settle into a natural-looking position.
Breast Implant Placement
Breast implants can be placed either above or under the chest muscle. Dr. Deziel usually places the implant under the muscle where it has another layer of tissue covering it, helping to conceal the implant and reduce the risk of visible rippling. However, placing the implant above the muscle is preferred for some patients. Here’s a quick summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each placement.
Advantages of placing implants under the muscle:
- More tissue covering the implant to conceal its shape and outline
- Less risk of visible implant folds or rippling
- Reduced risk of capsular contracture (a tightening of scar tissue that can squeeze the implant)
Disadvantages of placing implants under the muscle:
- Longer and more uncomfortable recovery
- Interference with chest muscles when lifting or flexing
Advantages of placing implants over the muscle:
- Easier recovery from surgery
- Less risk of bottoming out, where the implant drops below the natural crease under the breast
- No interference with professional weightlifting or body building
Disadvantages of placing implants over the muscle:
- Implants may be more visible, especially in women with little natural breast tissue
- Greater chance of rippling
The placement of your implants will depend on your lifestyle, the amount of existing breast tissue, and the implants you select.

Breast Augmentation FAQs
Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater and are inserted empty, allowing for a slightly smaller incision. However, they have a slightly higher tendency to be noticeable and ripple on the outsides of the breast. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.
Dr. Deziel performs a large number of breast augmentations using both silicone and saline implants and will help you to choose the best option for you during your consultation. Factors that may affect your decision include your current breast size and shape as well as your desired size.
Determining the best breast implant size for you involves several steps. First, Dr. Deziel will measure your breasts to determine which size will best suit your frame. Next, it’s helpful to look at photographs to determine what look you’re trying to achieve.
Finally, you’ll get to try on implant sizers with a sizing bra to get a feel for what the final result will look like. Dr. Deziel will use implant sizers in the operating room as well, to double-check final size prior to implant selection. Proper sizing is extremely important, so spend a lot of time ensuring you get your perfect size.
Dr. Deziel usually places incisions in the inframammary fold (the crease beneath the breast) because it leaves a scar that’s easily hidden by bikini tops and bras. Another option is a periareolar incision (around the dark border of the nipple), which blends well into women’s natural skin transition.
She will explain your options and the pros and cons of each during your consultation. We’ll also recommend the best approach for you based on your anatomy and the implant type and size you’ve chosen.
Many women are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation, particularly when the incision is placed beneath the breast. However, all breast surgery carries some risk that future milk production will be affected. If breastfeeding is important to you, discuss your plans with Dr. Deziel during your consultation so she can consider this when developing your surgical plan.
You can absolutely receive mammograms after breast augmentation. Implants can mask some tissue, so it’s important to inform your mammogram technician that you have implants prior to your screening.
Breast implants are designed to be long-lasting, but are not made to last forever. The lifespan varies from person to person and depends on factors such as the type of implant used and whether any complications develop.
If your implants remain intact and you’re happy with how they look, replacement surgery may not be necessary.
