What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery is a procedure designed to rejuvenate the area around the eyes. The surgery lifts droopy upper eyelids and smoothes out baggy lower eyelids to make them more youthful-looking. Patients who wish to enhance the beauty of their eyes and achieve a fresher, more youthful-looking appearance can rely on the experienced surgeons at Aqua Plastic Surgery in Jupiter, Fla., to produce eyelid lift results that are beautiful and natural-looking.

Eyelid Surgery Is Ideally Suited to:

  • Anyone worried that the look of their eyes is making them appear tired
  • Anyone with drooping upper eyelids and/or baggy lower lids, which can be hereditary.

NOTE: Blepharoplasty is not suitable for those with certain conditions, including dry eye, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Also, people with thyroid problems, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or other serious medical conditions should consult their physician before considering eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery offers aesthetic and functional benefits. For many patients, the procedure can:

  • Rejuvenate a tired or aged appearance
  • Remove excess, sagging skin that may impair vision
  • Reduce puffiness and under-eye bags
  • Improve the definition of the upper eyelid crease
  • Create a smoother, more youthful eyelid contour
  • By refining the eye area, eyelid surgery enhances the overall balance of facial features and helps patients look more rested and alert.

While both types of blepharoplasty target the eye area, upper and lower eyelid surgery serve distinct purposes and involve different techniques.

Upper eyelid surgery: This procedure focuses on removing excess skin and, in some cases, fat from the upper eyelids. With age, the skin above the eyes may droop or fold over the lash line, sometimes obstructing vision. Upper eyelid surgery creates a cleaner, more open look by restoring a natural eyelid crease and eliminating heaviness in the upper lids.

Lower eyelid surgery: Lower eyelid blepharoplasty addresses issues such as under-eye bags, puffiness, and loose skin. This may involve repositioning or removing fat, tightening underlying muscle, and eliminating excess skin. The goal is to smooth the transition between the lower lid and cheek, reducing the appearance of tiredness and eye hollows.

Depending on a patient’s needs, both procedures can be performed together for full eyelid rejuvenation.

The cost of eyelid surgery varies depending on whether upper, lower, or both eyelids are treated, as well as any additional procedures performed at the same time. During a consultation, our team will provide a personalized cost estimate based on the patient’s unique surgical plan. Financing options are available to help make care affordable.

To further enhance facial rejuvenation, eyelid surgery is often combined with:

  • Brow lift to correct a sagging brow or forehead
  • Facelift for full facial contouring
  • Dermal fillers to restore volume in the tear trough or cheek area

These options can be discussed in detail during your consultation.

The Consultation Process

You will sit down with your plastic surgeon for an informational consultation to learn more about what eyelid surgery can do for you.

About the Blepharoplasty Procedure

Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel begin upper eyelid surgery by making a discreet incision in the crease of the eyelid. After removing excess skin and fat, the doctor carefully closes the incision. During lower eyelid surgery, an incision is usually made under the lash line. The doctor then removes excess fat and skin, smoothing and tightening the eye area. When bothersome pockets of fat are the only concern, an incision may be made inside the lower eyelid in order to remove the fat. After closing the incision, the doctor carefully bandages the area.

Blepharoplasty Recovery and Results

Most patients experience bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort in the days following surgery. Ice packs and head elevation help reduce swelling. Stitches are typically removed within a week, and many patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within a week or two. Final results become more noticeable as swelling resolves, typically over several weeks.

Results are long-lasting, with many patients enjoying a more youthful, refreshed appearance for years.

We will schedule several follow-up appointments with you to check your healing progress and clear you to return to your regular lifestyle.
