Labiaplasty
Regain your self-confidence while diminishing discomfort.
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora, the inner lips or folds of the vulva. The goal is to alleviate discomfort caused by an elongated or asymmetrical labia, to improve aesthetic appearance, or to address issues related to hygiene or intimacy. Most women seek labiaplasty for functional reasons — because the excess labia twists, for example — or for cosmetic reasons, or both. The labia majora, or outer folds, may also be reshaped or reduced if needed.
For Aesthetics, Intimacy and Comfort
You May Be a Candidate for Labiaplasty if You:
- Experience discomfort during exercise, intercourse, or while wearing tight clothing
- Feel self-conscious about the appearance of your labia, especially if your labia minora protrudes beyond the edges of the labia majora
- Are in good physical and mental health
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure
- Are not pregnant or planning to get pregnant in the immediate future

Your surgeon may use the trim technique (removing edge) or the wedge technique (V-shaped cut) to remove excess tissue. Either of these labiaplasty techniques will take about an hour.

If there are no complications, you will never need this surgery again.
Having children after this procedure may affect your labia’s appearance. Most patients wait to have labioplasty until after they are sure they are done having children.
In the majority of cases, insurance will not cover labiaplasty. Most companies deem it a cosmetic surgery instead of a medically necessary surgery. However, each case is unique.

What To Expect: Labiaplasty
The Consultation Process
You will sit down with your plastic surgeon for an informational consultation to learn what arm lift procedures are best for your situation.
About the Procedure
Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon carefully trims or reshapes the labia to create a balanced, natural appearance. Techniques vary, but the most common methods include the trim technique, described above, and the wedge technique, in which a pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed from the inner area of one or both sides of your labia minora. The technique selected will be based on your unique anatomy and goals.
The procedure usually takes one to two hours, and patients return home the same day with instructions for pain and wound management. Reconstructive surgery may take longer.
The procedure may be combined with other body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck or mommy makeover.
Recovery from Labiaplasty
Recovery is relatively straightforward, with most patients resuming normal, non-strenuous activities within a few days to weeks. You can expect swelling and mild discomfort for the first week, with full recovery within four to six weeks in most cases. Some patients take longer to heal with swelling taking as long as four months to go away. Your stitches will dissolve naturally over time, and you can expect little to no scarring.
Patients should avoid vigorous exercise, sexual activity, and tampon use for at least four to six weeks or as advised by your surgeon. Every patient heals differently, and you should listen to your body instead of pushing yourself to return to work or other activities.
Follow-up
We will schedule follow-up appointments as needed to check your healing progress and clear you to return to your regular lifestyle.
