What Gynecomastia Surgery Can Fix

Gynecomastia is an increase in glandular breast tissue, fat, or both in the chest. It often starts during puberty, although some men develop gynecomastia later in life. If excess chest tissue is impacting your self-esteem or quality of life, male breast reduction surgery could be the solution you’re looking for.

Gynecomastia surgery can address the following concerns:

  • Excess chest fat that creates a rounded appearance
  • Asymmetry, where one side of the chest is more developed than the other
  • Stretched or sagging skin
  • Enlarged or puffy nipples
  • Self-consciousness in social situations
  • Frustration when exercise fails to improve chest appearance
  • Tenderness or discomfort in the chest area

What to Expect with Gynecomastia Surgery

The Consultation Process

Your consultation will begin with an open and honest discussion about your concerns and goals. Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will then examine your chest to determine what exactly is causing the fullness in the area. These factors, along with your skin quality and chest anatomy, will help determine the best surgical approach.

If you decide to move forward with surgery, your doctor will create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your body and desired outcome.

About the Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

Treatment usually includes liposuction and/or removal of glandular breast tissue, depending on your needs. For patients with excess fat, liposuction is performed through tiny, discreet incisions. When overdeveloped glandular tissue is present, a small incision is placed along the lower half of the areola to remove the tissue. If excess skin is a concern, your doctor can remove it to help create a more defined result.

Recovering from Gynecomastia Surgery

The First Few Days

Mild swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness in the pectoral area are common right after surgery. Many patients wear a compression shirt to help minimize the swelling and support their new chest shape during healing. Discomfort is usually described as mild to moderate and can be managed with your prescribed pain medication.

Returning to Daily Life

Most patients return to desk work and other non-strenuous activities within 3 to 7 days, while exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will provide personalized instructions based on your procedure and recovery progress.

Follow-Up Appointments

Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will monitor your healing with scheduled follow-up visits so you know when it’s safe to resume specific activities.

When You’ll See Your Final Results

You’ll see some improvements immediately, but swelling can temporarily conceal your final chest shape.

Most patients notice significant changes within the first several weeks, with continued refinement occurring over several months. Final results typically become apparent between 6 and 12 months after surgery.

Visiting Aqua from West Palm Beach

Aqua Plastic Surgery is located about twenty to thirty minutes north of West Palm Beach in Jupiter. For most patients in the WPB area, the drive is a straight shot up I-95 to Indiantown Road, or along Alternate A1A for a more scenic route through Juno Beach.

Our office is in The Commons at Abacoa, with parking directly outside. For patients having same-day surgery, a loved one can drive you home after the procedure so you can begin your recovery right away.

If you’d prefer to start with a virtual consultation before traveling to Jupiter, that’s also an option. Our team can walk you through what to expect and help you decide whether an in-person visit makes sense from the start.

Gynecomastia Surgery FAQs

Ideal candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about gynecomastia surgery. Patients should be close to their target weight and have maintained a stable weight for several months.

Yes, the results are typically permanent because the glandular tissue and fat cells removed during surgery do not grow back. However, it’s important to lead a healthy lifestyle, as significant weight gain or the use of certain medications/steroids can cause remaining fat or tissue to expand.

Gynecomastia surgery typically leaves minimal scarring. Liposuction incisions are very small and strategically placed, and glandular tissue removal is performed through an incision hidden along the edge of the areola. Most scars fade significantly over time and become difficult to notice.

The cost depends on several factors, including the techniques used and whether liposuction, gland removal, or skin removal is necessary. Your surgeon will provide a personalized quote during your consultation.

We do! Patients from West Palm Beach and throughout South Florida are welcome to begin with a virtual consultation before scheduling an in-person visit.
