What Labiaplasty Can Address
The size and shape of the labia vary naturally from woman to woman. Pregnancy, childbirth, aging, genetics, or significant weight changes can also alter the appearance over time. Sometimes, these changes can lead to physical discomfort or self-consciousness.
Many women are surprised to learn they’re not alone and that their concerns are both common and completely normal.
Labiaplasty removes excess tissue from the labia minora to create a smaller, more symmetrical appearance while still preserving function. Whether your concerns are related to discomfort during daily activities, or dissatisfaction with your labia’s appearance, labiaplasty can provide lasting relief and natural-looking results.
Here are some of the most common concerns patients are looking to address:
- Discomfort during activities like cycling or running
- Irritation caused by tight clothes like underwear and swimsuits
- Discomfort during sexual activity
- Painful twisting or pulling of excess tissue
- Enlarged or elongated labia
- Asymmetry between the labia
- Self-consciousness about the appearance of the labia, especially in intimate moments or tight clothing
Why Choose Aqua Plastic Surgery for Labiaplasty
Pursuing labiaplasty is a deeply personal decision that women can feel hesitant to make due to the intimate nature of the area. One of Dr. Deziel’s biggest priorities is providing an environment where women feel comfortable discussing their concerns. She’ll also take time to answer your questions and explain your options without pressure. Your surgical plan will be customized to your anatomy and desired outcome, with a focus on results that relieve discomfort and improve confidence.
Dr. Deziel performs labiaplasty in Aqua Plastic Surgery’s state of the art, AAAASF-accredited operating suites in Jupiter.
What to Expect with Labiaplasty
The Consultation Process
In your private, confidential consultation, Dr. Deziel will ask you about your medical history, symptoms, and goals for the procedure. She’ll perform a gentle examination so she can determine if labiaplasty is the right option and start to form your personalized surgical plan.
After your evaluation, she’ll explain what labiaplasty technique she recommends and will give an honest explanation of the results you can expect.
About the Procedure
Labiaplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and takes about 1 to 2 hours. During surgery, Dr. Deziel carefully reshapes the tissue using fine, dissolvable sutures to preserve both function and sensation.
Your surgical plan will be unique to you and based on your anatomy and goals, with the trim and wedge techniques being the two most common approaches.
Trim Labiaplasty
The trim technique involves removing excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia minora before carefully reshaping the remaining tissue. This technique is often recommended for women with excess tissue extending along the entire edge of the labia, or for those who would like a smoother contour. With the trim technique, Dr. Deziel may also remove any darker or irregular tissue that’s present along the edge of the labia.
Wedge Labiaplasty
With the wedge technique, Dr. Deziel removes a V-shaped section of tissue from the area of greatest protrusion, usually the middle or lower portion of the labia. This technique can help maintain the natural border of the labia and is often recommended for patients with localized enlargement rather than excess tissue along the entire length.
Clitoral Hood Reduction
Many women who have excess labial tissue also have extra folds of skin along the clitoral hood. When that tissue contributes to irritation or to an appearance you want to change, it can be reduced during the same procedure.
Whether a hood reduction makes sense for you is something Dr. Deziel will assess during your consultation. It’s not necessary for every patient.
Recovery
The First Few Days
You can expect swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate throbbing or aching. Dr. Deziel will recommend ways to manage the discomfort and promote healing, such as applying cold compresses and limiting physical activity.
Returning to Daily Life
Most women return to desk work within a week, depending on their comfort level. Walking is encouraged early in recovery, but strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided for 6 weeks or until Dr. Deziel confirms you’re healing well. Patients should also avoid using tampons during this time.
Follow-Up Appointments
Dr. Deziel will schedule follow-up visits throughout your recovery to monitor healing and ensure you’re recovering as expected.
When You’ll See Your Final Results
Swelling will gradually improve over several weeks and most patients notice a significant improvement within the first month. Your final results will continue to refine over 3 to 6 months as the tissues fully heal.

Labiaplasty FAQs
Preserving sensation is a primary goal of the procedure, and Dr. Deziel plans each surgery to remove only the tissue causing your symptoms. Technique matters here, which is one reason she discusses the trim and wedge approaches with you in detail. Temporary changes in sensation during healing are normal, and most women find that intimacy becomes more comfortable once painful pulling or friction is gone.
Dr. Deziel uses ultra-fine dissolvable sutures for labiaplasty. They’ll gently dissolve on their own over the course of 2 to 3 weeks as your skin heals, so you don’t need to return to the clinic for removal.
Your incisions will be placed along the natural edges of the labia, and as healing progresses, scars are typically very difficult to notice.
Most patients can resume light walking shortly after surgery, but more strenuous exercise like running, cycling, and weight training should be avoided for at least 6 weeks or until you’re cleared by Dr. Deziel.
Absolutely. Labiaplasty does not prevent future pregnancy or childbirth. However, because pregnancy and vaginal delivery can change your tissues, many women choose to wait until they’ve finished having children before undergoing surgery.
If you’re done having children and are interested in labiaplasty, we recommend waiting at least 6 months after childbirth and until you’ve finished breastfeeding, since hormonal changes can affect swelling and tissue healing.
Yes. Dr. Allyson Deziel is a board-certified female plastic surgeon and performs all labiaplasty procedures at Aqua Plastic Surgery. Many patients tell us this was a deciding factor for them.
Yes, in many cases you can still have labiaplasty if you’re menstruating. However, every patient and surgical plan is different. If you expect to have your period around the time of your procedure, let Dr. Deziel know in advance. She’ll tell you whether any adjustments are needed and answer any questions you have before surgery.
Patients should avoid sexual activity for about 6 weeks after labiaplasty to allow the tissues to heal properly. During this time, it’s also important to avoid inserting anything into the vagina, including tampons. Dr. Deziel will monitor your healing during follow-up appointments and let you know when it’s safe to resume your normal activities.
Labiaplasty results are considered permanent because the excess tissue removed during surgery does not grow back. The natural aging process will continue, but most women enjoy their results for the rest of their lives. It’s important to know that pregnancy and vaginal childbirth can alter the tissues again, so many women wait until they’re finished having children before getting labiaplasty.
The cost of labiaplasty depends on the extent of the procedure as well as the technique used. Dr. Deziel will provide a personalized quote during your consultation.
To help patients have better access to treatment, Aqua Plastic Surgery offers financing through CareCredit as well as an in-house option. A member of the Aqua team would be happy to discuss which option works best for you.
