What Facial Fat Grafting Can Improve

Many people associate facial aging with loose skin and wrinkles, but volume plays an equally important role. Because facial fat diminishes as we age, we can gradually take on an appearance that makes us look older than we feel.

Facial fat grafting (also known as facial fat transfer) resolves this volume loss by transferring fat from another part of your body into targeted areas on your face.

Patients usually opt for facial fat grafting to address one or more of the following:

  • Hollow or sunken cheeks
  • Volume loss beneath the eyes
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Loss of facial fullness due to aging
  • Deep facial folds and creases
  • A tired appearance
  • Loss of facial definition after significant weight loss

What to Expect with Facial Fat Grafting

The Consultation Process

During your consultation, Dr. Rankin or Dr. Deziel will ask you about your concerns and goals regarding your face. Your doctor will then evaluate your anatomy to see where you’re missing volume and determine whether facial fat grafting is the best option to achieve your desired results.

Your doctor will also discuss potential fat donor sites, which often include the abdomen, hips, or thighs.

About the Procedure

Facial fat grafting is typically performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your treatment plan and whether other procedures are being performed at the same time.

The procedure begins by removing a small amount of fat from your donor site through liposuction. The fat is then purified and carefully injected into targeted areas of your face. Both doctors at Aqua use specialized techniques to maximize fat survival and create smooth, natural contours.

Facial fat grafting usually takes between 1 and 3 hours depending on the number of areas being treated.

Recovery

The First Few Days

You can expect swelling and bruising in both the treated facial areas and the donor site. Most discomfort can be managed with pain medication and typically improves within a week.

Returning to Daily Life

Many patients return to desk work and other light activities within a week. Some swelling may persist for a few weeks, but it will gradually subside as healing continues.

When You’ll See Your Final Results

Final results are visible once swelling resolves and the transferred fat establishes a blood supply in its new location. For most patients, this takes a few months, but the results are long-lasting. And because the transferred fat comes from your own body, the results often look and feel extremely natural.

Facial Fat Grafting FAQs

A portion of your transferred fat will be reabsorbed by your body during the healing process, but the fat cells that successfully establish a blood supply remain permanently. Your face will continue to age naturally, but the restored volume will stay intact.

Both treatments restore facial volume, but fillers use synthetic substances while fat grafting uses your own fat. Fat grafting typically involves a surgical procedure and a longer recovery period, but the results are much longer lasting, since fillers are eventually absorbed by the body.

Facial fat grafting only requires tiny injection points and small liposuction incisions at the donor site, so there are no large incisions. Most patients find their scars are minimal and fade significantly over time.
